On Election Night, a Tossup Among Parties

Here's a study in contrasts for you.
On Tuesday, Women's Wear Daily threw a 100th birthday party for itself at Cipriani 42nd Street. Pretty much anyone who works even peripherally in the fashion biz was there to watch the skinny, beautiful people avoid white-glove waiters carrying trays of tuna tartare on endive.
As an inside joke, there was a cooler of "WWD Kool-Aid," which was actually 100-proof Belvedere vodka, various juices, grenadine and Sprite. (Like at most off-beat organizations, people who stay for years at WWD have been "drinking the Kool-Aid.")
A birthday cake, five feet tall, four feet in diameter, was made of real fondant, but the inside was layers of WWD newspapers. (David Stark, who designed the party, begged off the suggestion the cake was inedible because fashion people aren't really interested in eating cake, anyway.)
Where does the study in contrasts come in? Well, Tuesday was also Election Day, and just above Times Square, the Republicans and the Democrats were having their own mini-celebrations.
At Cipriani, a coat-checker not only brought a reporter's coat and bag to him on his way out the door, but helped him get both of his arms into his Barbour jacket. Over at the Hilton on Sixth Avenue, the Republican shindig was more of a hang-your-own-outerwear-on-one-of-a-dozen-racks-stranded-in-the-middle-of-a-dank-hotel-hallway kind of affair.
In the main Republican ballroom, you had to buy your own drinks! A beer was $9, bottled water was $5. It was bananas! At least in a smaller ballroom where Harry Wilson's supporters gathered, there was a limited spread of potato chips, hummus and tzatziki, a few lonely fried fish patties, ziti and some bottles of wine.
The choice of soft drinks chez Wilson was rather democratic, if you'll allow the word choice. Coca-Cola products rested comfortably next to Pepsi, with, strangely enough, Fanta orange soda the most depleted option.
This may have been because there were two children voraciously coloring pictures of Elmo in the back or simply because fiscal conservatives enjoy their beverages caffeine free.
"I hear the food is better in one of the other rooms," said a Harvard classmate of Mr. Wilson. "Should we go sneak in there?"
We thought you'd never ask! This was where the glamour was. Party chairman Ed Cox was serving Prosciutto on toast points. The vegetables were serrated, and there was fancy cheese being replenished by hotel staff.
"People are mostly drinking Scotch and red and white wine," explained one of the hired bartenders of the actual open bar.
A city block away at the Sheraton might have been the only happy Democrats' party in the nation. In Andrew Cuomo's ballroom, there was a cash bar, too: $10 for name-brand cocktails, $15 for "cordials." There was also a little more star power: the philanthropist Grace Hightower, the actress Marcia Gay Harden, the actor Joey Pantoliano.
"I'm a friend of the family and I'm Italian-American," said Mr. Pantoliano, who actually lives in Connecticut. "I wanted my daughter Isabella to feel the energy."
A hallway away from a silver tray set-up of fried egg-rolls and bacon-wrapped shrimp, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn explained that political celebrations "are not quite red carpet."
"The food is really fattening, and you always have one eye on the television screen for results," Ms. Quinn continued. "I had a few pigs in a blanket, though. They're my weakness. When I eat them, I usually pop a cinnamoned Altoid."
In New York, there are a few people you see at almost every party, whether they've been invited or not. Two of them were at the Sheraton. Maybe best to let them weigh in.
The first: Shaggy a.k.a. Steve Kaplan, an infamous crasher who now "gets invited to lots of things," he said. How was the party for the Democrats? "It's no big deal," he said. "It's kind of stuffy."
And the second: Hillary Latos, a shoe designer. "There's more power here than your typical event," Ms. Latos said. "But compared to fashion, it sucks."
