Asian American women are sometimes stereotyped as the “healthy minority.” Asian American women have the highest life expectancy of any group in the United States. Yet, Asian Americans have many real and serious threats to their health, including cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and tuberculosis. Moreover, grouping all Asian Americans into a single category hides the health risks of specific subgroups. What limitations do Asian Americans face (language barriers, learning the risk factors for disease, understanding the role of preventative health care, cultural beliefs, Eastern vs. Western medicine, cost, etc.)?
