Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to speak to Hollywood Beauty Specialist and beauty editor of Viva Glam Magazine, Katarina Van Derham, about Asian beauty. Katarina is a world re-known beauty specialist. When asked about her ideal concept of beauty, she stated, "I disagree with the belief that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I know many people may agree with this. But there is a science behind what is attractive. And what is attractive is beauty. I know the science behind it whereas many people in the beauty industry don't.

This month I had the pleasure of speaking with Darryl Wong of Speed Wong Racing. For the past 7 years, Speed Wong Racing has grown into a successful race car team on the West Coast. Speed Wong Racing started out quietly in 2003. It was simply a father and a son, neither of whom had any racing experience. They purchased one Legends race car on a whim. From that one car to today, Speed Wong Racing has grown to a stable of race cars and heavy transport trucks. I spoke to Darryl about Speed Wong Racing, cars and the business principles that have built this team.

After a year of writing for Asiance, I've read a year's worth of comments. And a lot of them beg a question: Why are Asian men so angry about women who... date non-Asian men?

For example:

  1. "Yeah, we know you, you belong to the white guys who date you for novelty but never marry you. Anything for acceptance.
  2. That sounds more like "White Fever" to me. I don't know if the author is one of these types, but I would HOPE NOT for it would be quite hypocritical if you ask me.

Recently, I had the opportunity to meet high fashion photographer, Edward Duarte. Based in Los Angeles, Duarte has developed a long standing relationship with Japanese fashion and celebrity. Some of his past clients include Ken Watanabe, Rinko Kikuchi, Nobu Matsuhisu and artist Murakami.

This month I had the pleasure of meeting actor and independent filmmaker, Carlo Corbellini. Born and raised in Rome, Italy, Corbellini began his acting career at 16 with the role of Benny in the critically acclaimed movie Biuti Quin Olivia. In 2002 he moved to Chicago to complete studies in Industrial Engineering and Economics at Northwestern University while continuing his drama training with Kimmie Companik (The Second City) and Grant Stokes (Uta Hagen scholar, Royal Shakespeare Company).

This month I had the opportunity to work with celebrity makeup artist, Yoko Nobushi. Yoko was born in Japan and came to the US when she was 25 to pursue her dream of learning special effects makeup. Financially strapped, she worked day and night to save enough money to move to America. She is currently working on the NBC show, "OUTLAW" and is also the subject of a new documentary, "Gutto! Chikyubin". I spoke to Yoko about her new projects and celebrity status as a makeup artist here in Los Angeles.

Last week I had the opportunity to meet Asian entrepreneur, Alice Koskas. Alice is the founder and owner of The Lounge Spa in Los Angeles, CA. In 2005, Koskas opened the spa with over 20 years of experience in the beauty industry.

Koskas’ calling, literally, was skin deep. For years she suffered from acne and wanted to learn more about skin care and became an esthetician. By utilizing her new-found knowledge, she vowed to help others who suffered from acne. For over 17 years, Koskas worked for some of the most highly respected companies in the skin care industry.

Last month, I had the opportunity to work with Dutch filmmaker mZiah. A music artist and producer in his youth, mZiah released his first record on one of the leading European electronic music labels, Music Man, at age 18. “This was an excellent start for somebody who couldn’t wait to be old enough to be a real artist,” mZiah told me when I asked him about his emerging career.

After projects with SONY (Germany),Universal (U.K.),EMI(Worldwide) and BMG (Europe), mZIAH decided to try the independent route. He moved to the US and focused on his visual talents.

Last month, I had the opportunity to work with award winning cinematographer, Keiko Nakahara on the psychological thriller, "Coffin", which stars Kevin Sorbo and Bruce Davison. Born and raised in Japan, at the age of 22, she moved to the US and studied cinematography at San Diego State University. During this time, she received an honor for Outstanding Cinematography for the short film, “Mira Marst" and for documentary "Blue Fish." Since then, Keiko has shot award winning features, short films, and documentaries.

Several men have told me that, according to God, we needed to be together.

"We were destined to be together." "God wants us to be together."

Wow, God wants EXACTLY what you want. Don't you love it when that happens?

A lot of men have said -- and apparently believed -- that they were my soulmates. I must have a lot of soul. Or maybe it's God's way of telling me that I'm meant for plural marriage -- or a harem of dubious men. Or the soulmate department is falling behind in quality control and empowering way too many dudes with this notion.

I’ve gone on a million dates. Many were blind dates. They usually went something like this:

“He’s good-looking, has a great job, and knows all about you.”

(Translation: He's already Googled me.)

“Then why aren’t you dating him?”

“Oh, he’s not my type. But I'm SURE he'll be yours."

Riiight.

So: here’s a list of safety tips when diving into the dating world of the unknown. Learn by my error:

1. The Repo Man.

I’ve never been a waitress, hostess, bartender or any of the typical side jobs you’d expect an actor to have. This is partly because I’ve always been afraid of dropping plates on customer’s heads. But I’ve had an array of weird jobs to stay afloat when I was starting out. Here are a few:

When I decided to become an actor, I drove my beat-up Honda Civic from Texas to California in the 105-degree heat of July. If you saw photos from that trip (which you never will, thank God), you'd see me with huge false eyelashes, way too much eyeliner, frizzy pouffed hair (well, I did just drive from Dallas), cream blush, Lee press-on nails and an eye shadow color reminiscent of "The World of Suzy Wong."

Purty. Awful.

Since then, trial and error (and error) as I've prepared for thousands of auditions has taught me how to dismiss a lot of the makeup monkey business.

Last week I visited Chatroulette, a site that brings a random cavalcade of complete strangers into your home, via live webcam, from anywhere in the world. A male friend volunteered to serve as stenographer and virtual security guard.

Recently, Asiance Magazine asked me to write a monthly column on women’s safety. Now you might ask yourself, “Who in the world is Candace Kita and why is she writing about women’s safety?” Believe me, a few years ago the thought of writing about safety issues would have never crossed my mind, either. I mean, what a dry topic. Why couldn’t they have asked me to do a column on fashion or food reviews?

But I guess the saying is true: Necessity is the mother of invention. And while I'm an actor by trade, I needed to become a safety expert. Had no choice, in fact.

It’s been awhile since we’ve caught up with actress and model Candace Kita. The last time we touched base, she was co-starring in “I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry” with Adam Sandler and Kevin James. Today, she’s continuing her acting career having just wrapped two films: “Christmas in Beverly Hills” and “Do Me a Solid”. And she’s currently in pre-production on the martial arts film, “War of the Dragon”.
