Maybe it’s the Asian competitive gene in me, but I can spend hours on a single Angry Birds level in order to achieve the elusive three stars. Sometimes I even flash my screen of completed levels to friends, beaming as if it were a perfect report card.

I come from a family of teachers, PhDs, and scientists. Telling them I wanted to do a little open mic stand-up comedy—just on the side of my full-time job—did not yield the most favorable response.

“Does your boyfriend know about this?” my mom asked in horror.

Of course not, mom! I wouldn’t dare tell him about such a deviant activity. My mom had no idea what stand-up comedy means, except that she thinks comedians only talk about topics related to sex and drugs. I comforted her to not worry about what my topics will be because I will never show a set to her anyway.

Lights. Camera. Action!

Not many people understand the grueling process behind the filmmaking process. (I am among them.) To me, filmmaking evokes overwhelming images of techie, expensive cameras, not to mention sacrifice of time and money (with no guarantee of success!). But curiosity drove me to attend the filmmaking workshop, “Don’t Quit Your Day Job,” held at the Goethe-Institut in DC’s Chinatown. The workshop was one of many different events presented by the 11th Annual DC APA Film Festival (www.apafilm.org) between October 9 and 16. Although I was unsure if I wanted to pursue filmmaking as a side hobby or career, I wanted to know how much of the filmmaking process could be fleshed out to busy professionals of different backgrounds.

“Now let’s each think of a stripper name.”

Orientation for Stripping 101? Not exactly. I was among ten girls invited to my friend’s birthday celebration: a private pole dancing session at Pole Pressure in DC (www.polepressure.com).

The instructor, Amanda, towered above all of us in her clear stilettos with black and white ankle straps. I wanted to keep my bones intact so, like most of the other girls, I went barefoot.

Anil Rock is humming to the melody of his new song, Because of Dreams, which tells a story about the life of a boy whose only escape from his discordant world was the fantasy of dreaming, softly as we waited for lunch in downtown Silver Spring, Maryland.

Several months ago, a palm reader once warned me that I was going to lose a large sum of money in the near future. I scoffed at this but I canceled a hair-removing consultation that could subsequently result in my spending hundreds of dollars. Little did I know that I still couldn’t escape fate.

It is 8:45 a.m. Two students squirm in their chairs, staring at their closed books. Seven minutes later, four more students trickle in. The teacher calls security about a disruptive student while all the others take advantage of the dead time by gabbing and throwing paper balls. Ten more minutes pass. I overhear some students planning the number of classes they can cut and still barely pass summer school. The student sitting in front of the class is sleeping again. "But I don't wanna do this, mister. It's so boring," he says as he lifts his head.

Chris Rock once said that, when you’re dating someone for the first time, you are meeting his or her representative. All jokes aside, I think there is an element of truth to this statement. Often compared to interviewing for jobs, dating this day and age is a numbers game of showcasing your resume to several applicants until a reply occurs. For the busy, exhausted, or curious, one way to date people on a fast-paced scale is through speed dating.
