Up-and-coming Asian American dance, music and comedy stars join forces with Rutgers students for B HERE, a national campaign to raise awareness of hepatitis B.

The B HERE campaign features two campus events:

- Multi-media art exhibit showcasing perspectives on chronic hepatitis B, a life-threatening liver disease that disproportionately affects Asian Americans

Jim Hwang started his career on Wall Street, working on the commodities exchange. Long story short, after 9/11, he lost his job and found work through a friend’s then girlfriend working for a photographer who turned out (unbeknownst to Jim) to be one of the most notorious old school paparazzi (Ron Galella), whose storied career involved being sued by Jackie Onassis and having his teeth knocked out by Marlon Brando. After working in his office and shooting some press events, Jim realized how much the nature of shooting celebrity images was just like working in the pits at the NYBOT.

University Asian Am Assoc hosts “Glee” premiere party

The Asian American Association of the University of Missouri is hosting a “Glee” season two premiere party as its first social event of the year.

This season, Charice Pempengco, the 18-year-old Filippino vocal powerhouse Oprah Winfrey called the most talented girl in the world, was added to the cast to play foreign exchange student, Sunshine Corazon, something AAA said they are excited about.

Fashion Backstage interview with Monique Lhuillier - Spring 2011

Monique Lhuillier was born Diane Monique Llamas Lhuillier in Cebu, Philippines grew up on Cebu, one of the islands of the Philippines archipelago, in a home with two brothers and a sister. Their father was of French heritage, but had been born in Vietnam when that Southeast Asian country was still a French colony, and had a varied career as a diplomat, jeweler, and real estate investor. Lhuillier's mother was from the Philippines and had once worked as a model.

Tadashi Shoji was born and raised in Sendai, Japan. He began painting and drawing at a young age and eventually moved to Tokyo, where he studied fine art. His talent was soon recognized and he was recommended for an apprenticeship with Japan’s leading contemporary artist, Jiro Takamatsu, who is credited with paving the way for the modern art movement in Japan during the sixties.

University Purchase College forges relationship with Beijing Dance

The Purchase College School of the Arts Conservatory of Dance was visited by a delegation from Beijing China on yesterday, September 16 to finalize an agreement for an ongoing relationship between Purchase College and the Beijing Dance Academy.

Purchase College President Thomas J. Schwarz and President Li Xu of the Beijing Dance Academy signed the document which will establish an agreement between the two institutions for student exchanges. It is anticipated that this will set a precedent for other exchanges.

Beauty Celebrity makeup artist, Yoko Nobushi

This month I had the opportunity to work with celebrity makeup artist, Yoko Nobushi. Yoko was born in Japan and came to the US when she was 25 to pursue her dream of learning special effects makeup. Financially strapped, she worked day and night to save enough money to move to America. She is currently working on the NBC show, "OUTLAW" and is also the subject of a new documentary, "Gutto! Chikyubin". I spoke to Yoko about her new projects and celebrity status as a makeup artist here in Los Angeles.

University Harvard to host first Asian American Summit

Times are 'changing!

Harvard Asian-American alumni from around the world are slated to fly to Cambridge this fall for the first-ever Harvard Asian American Alumni Summit, an event sponsored by the Harvard Asian American Alumni Alliance.

The summit, which is scheduled to run from Oct. 15 to 17, aims to bring together Asian-American alumni, faculty, students, and staff from Harvard’s schools for a weekend of panel discussions, networking events, and informal social gatherings.

University Colorado State University announces most ethnically diverse class

The largest and most diverse freshman class in school history has boosted Colorado State University’s total enrollment to an all-time high. The fall 2010 freshman class of 4,472 surpasses the previous record of 4,404, which was set in 2008. The total enrollment at Colorado State is now 26,348, a 3.7 percent increase over last year.

When my editor gave me a book, that someone had sent to me titled “Finding the Right Man For You: Dating Advice for Women”, I almost choked on my coffee. Oh is that it hun? Last week I had the opportunity to meet Asian entrepreneur, Alice Koskas. Alice is the founder and owner of The Lounge Spa in Los Angeles, CA. In 2005, Koskas opened the spa with over 20 years of experience in the beauty industry.

Koskas’ calling, literally, was skin deep. For years she suffered from acne and wanted to learn more about skin care and became an esthetician. By utilizing her new-found knowledge, she vowed to help others who suffered from acne. For over 17 years, Koskas worked for some of the most highly respected companies in the skin care industry.
